New artists

I’ve recently discovered two artists whose work I thoroughly enjoy. The first is Hélène Binet, a black and white film  architecture photographer. She prefers black and white because it tells the story of a building the best, without the unnecessary distractions of color. Light, space, texture. The second is Kay Sage, whose work I saw recently at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina. Her work always seems to have a narrative behind, much like Hopper and Chirico.

Here are some samples of their works:

UC Parking Garage Demolished

As you may know, after hearing about the University of Tennessee’s plan to demolish the University Center parking garage,   I took it upon myself to archive it. For the past two years I’ve explored, investigated and photographed what many see as “just a parking garage”.  What I found was a parking garage…but one that seemed more than what it actually was. Bob Church, the architect, designed it to serve as both parking garage and as a pedestrian walk way for students to socialize. The spirit of the spaces within the parking garage transcended the mundane nature of the program.

I will be adding a “Parking Garage Archive” section shortly. For now enjoy the Before/After images below.

You can now view photographs of the parking garage before it’s destruction Here. Post demolition photographs are coming soon!

Enjoy!

Despite the overcast weather, I decided to explore a nearby construction site. It’s a 3 story concrete structure and the atmosphere is sublime. Water dripping into puddles, re-bar sticking out of the walls… If only they’d leave the space incomplete. Below are photographs of some of the stacked materials lying around the site.

All I want to do is paint sunlight on the wall

Recently I’ve become obsessed with these two artists, Giorgio de Chirico and Edward Hopper. The way both deal with light and space is something I’ve searched for in my architecture. With Chirico, I enjoy his play with shadows and his painting titles hint at a narrative. Similarly, Edward Hopper begins to write a story about his spaces and the subjects in them. He pays special attention to body posture and mood. Enjoy–
